Post Game Interviews vs UAF
82 ain't pretty, but it still counts. The Seawolves took the lead in the Governor's Cup with a 3-2 win over Nanooks. It wasn't pretty, in fact the first period had me yelling for them to wake up (sorry guys, but like many UAA alum I don't take poor play against UAF very well). UAA came back in the second period, getting a quick goal from Eric Scheid. UAA then got a bit of a break, Kory Roy was hauled down on a breakaway and given a penalty shot (karma of the water bottle I said, one that didn't get called two years ago). He missed and on the ensuing faceoff Curtis Leinweber scored one past Greeneggsandham for a 2-1 lead. Brett Cameron scored the game winner on a sharp angle shot that went off eggsandham's stick. UAF got one back that needed a review to count but the Seawolves played well down the stretch and got some great saves from Chris Kamal (Rob Gunderson reportedly picked up an injury in practice and did not dress).
At least a point tomorrow and the Cup comes home. On another note, if you can't be in Fairbanks please head out to the Wells Fargo Center and watch the UAA Womens BBall team play UAF. Both games are important as, if my research is correct, no UAF team has beaten UAA this school year and these are the last two meetings. I Want A Clean Sweep! Go Seawolves!
Also: I'm hitting the road and will be up in Fairbanks. I can't guarantee interviews but I will taking some video highlighting the road trip.

Is tonights game not on TV?
It's on gci channel 1 at 7:00, and then the boys will be bringing the cup home with them. Where are all the uaf trolls after last nights beat down. You tender looked awful last night.
Hey Anon@2:07,What were you saying.Your "BOYS" will not be bringing the cup home, because it's here with us @ UAF. Yes it's true you lost the cup again. That's three years in a row.Thank you!
Love all the smack you can talk but your team can't back it up. GO NOOKS!!!
WHO GOT THE CUP? WE GOT THE CUP!
Come on now!Really can't wait to her from all the trash talkers. What's the matter,Dump Bears hurt your feelings? We really must let you shoot the puck more.SOG 31-15,well thats not fair.Waiting to here from Suze, akswf,Alaska Hockey and akfan. Come on now,Nanook fans get to "RUB YOUR NOSE IT" for the rest of the year.Love YA! :)
Yeah! Let's HEAR IT!!!
They are awfully quiet today...must be licking their wounds.
Gee, since the Nanooks can't beat anyone in their own league they think beating UAA in a shoot out by ONE shoot out goal makes them national champs? Had Kwas' shoot out "goal" been reviewed like Shyiak asked for, UAA may have the CUP right now.
And "RUB YOUR NOSE IT"? You must be a UA_ college student. LOL. Enjoy the cup, that's all your team is capable of this season.
And oh yeah ... airbanks fans like to brag about their great fans, but it sure was fun to hear Bruce say how quiet it was in the Carlson before they scored their first goal. Priceless.
I think they made more noise in Anchorage than they did in airbanks.
That's all you got AKfan. "RUB,RUB,RUB!!!!! Your nose sore yet? LOL,:)
Yeah, Anchorage sure kicked some butt in the WCHA this year huh? Neither team had a good season in their league but we came out on top as being the best team in the state.
And about the stupid "goal", it hit the post, didn't go in. But that is all you Anchorage fans can do after we beat you year after year, put the blame in everyone except your own team.
And at least our fans showed up in Anchorage AND at the Carlson Center. The UAA student section was non existent at the Sully...and it is sad to know your "fans" won't make the trip here for a game. I saw maybe 10 Seawolf fans last night?
Anyone Know where the cup is? Anyone????
Dear _airbanks Trolls,
I_ your team had lost 5 out o_ your 11 cups via shootout, you wouldn't be talking much either. I still am _or at least a 5 min. OT be_ore the shootout, but I guess our AD bowed down to your AD or whoever makes these decisions.
Sincerely,
- AS_. Meh.
"The UAA student section was non existent at the Sully.."
Really??? I guess you weren't there then. They made your section sound pathetic. I was behind your fans and they kept watching the UAA student section (which was twice the size) and looking intimidated. It was worth the price of admission just to see it.
I also loved how the PA system drowned out your oh so clever "What's a Seawolf" chant. I bet that really got under your skin, didn't it? A picture is worth a thousand words.
Donald or JJ, do you have a way to post the video of Kwas shootout goal that wasn't counted?
Seawolf Fanatic: Yeah but guess what? We HAVEN'T LOST that many in a shootout, shootouts are a part of hockey any team should practice regardless of if you have shootouts in your league or not. That's why your guy missed on Greenham on Friday night, maybe if UAA practiced it more then he would have made that shot and you would have won the Cup.
Anon @ 2:06
You can't hear a damn thing through the PA system at the Sully so I don't know what you're talking about saying they drowned out the chant. And for real, the loudest part of the 'student' section was some kids beating on garbage cans...can you seriously not afford real instruments?
I was in the section with all the UAF fans at the Sully, and we definitely weren't looking intimidated at all. We made a hell of a lot more noise than your fans at the Sullivan than you guys did at the Carlson so even if we were outnumbered, at least we showed up.
I just saw the game and shootout, the "goal" hit the top cross bar, never went in.
Kwas didn't score on his shot.
Tell me MIke....did you have some special vantage point? Or is that just your opinion? I think it was worth reviewing...frustrating that they it wasn't considered....
Rewind it and watch it on your DVR til your convinced..no goal. The only way that goes in (crosses the goal line) and comes back out is to hit the bar across the back of the cage. No goal...sorry I'm a UAA Fan and can live with it. I'm more disappointed in our back to back play then anything. Who's going to be afraid of us in the 1st round? UAF has shoot outs in league play, advantage them (obviously).
Have you seen the shot? Like Mike said, no goal. I was also seated pretty much right at the side of the goal and it didn't go in. The ref had the best view, he called no goal...so come on guys get over the whole 'it needed to be reviewed' thing.
This may sound very simple, but try to think of a shoot out like a break way shot on the goalie or like a penalty shot. This happened in the first game in your own rink. Remember? OK,this type of thing (Shoot out) is part of the game called HOCKEY. It only takes place in the CCHA when there is a tie at the end of a 5 min overtime. So really UAF has no real advantage, because it is very common for teams to practice this. I hope this helps you to better understand the game.
I was in the PA announcers booth, with the video review monitor directly to my right, which looks straight down on top of the goal. The puck hit the bottom of the crossbar, which is parallel to the goal line. But remember, to be a goal it has to completely cross the goal line, which it did not. As the saying goes, "Close, but no cigar".
Maybe ACC needs to join a Horse shoe league. That's the only game I can think of that gives points for getting close.LOL :)
UA_ fans have UAA to thank for your even having a league to play in when the CCHA falls apart soon. UAA fought VERY hard to get UA_ accepted because the other teams in the WCHA did not want 2 Alaska schools.
Without UAA you might not even have a team in 2 years. So get over yourselves.
AKfan, really? UAA doesn't have that much pull in their league. The Nanooks didn't have to beg or plead or have any other team fight for them. So get over YOURSELVES.
THIS is why the Nanooks got INVITED to join the WCHA:
(from the newsminer article)
McLeod said, too, that he was impressed with the Nanooks program and UAF during his visit two weeks ago.
“I was impressed with the institutional commitment, the community commitment and their plans for the future of their building,” McLeod said. “They did a great job of hosting me and Tom (Serratore, Bemidji State head coach). I think it paid off for them.”
Of please everyone, he said, she said, we,said. In 2 years we get to battle it out in league play and then talk. We act like this is Lord Stanleys cup...and we all know that's only been to Anchortown...
See ya then UAF.
UAF is in the future WCHA for one reason. Because a boatload of other teams left the WCHA and CCHA and there really was no choice but to get the remaining teams from those leagues together.
That said, there can be no doubt that Forrest Karr and Steve Cobb cooperated closely to help ensure it happened as it was in their mutual best interest.
What happened 20 years ago when the CCHA and WCHA combined to "save" UAA and UAF hockey was an injustice perpetrated by those two league's members. Splitting them up served all those other team's interests who were all excessively whining pussies and who's machinations went nuclear at the thought of having to travel up here twice. So they fucked UAA and UAF while "saving" us.
As to the question of goal/no goal in the shootout ... I'd still be interested to see it. Awarding anything of significance based on some skill of some event that happens less than 1% of the has always been stupid. So the "caveat" of having won possession of a trophy based on this silly skills contest is wholly appropriate. Don't like the taint? Change the way it's awarded. Let the current holder keep it in a split.
Anyway now the Seawolves are 8-4-1 in the last 13 games vs. UAF and the all-time record is 82-52-11. So there's that.
Mr Dunlop, you seem to have an objective view of the UAA program right now. I thought they hired an assistant with American contacts to recruit more American players. To date, I haven't seen them having much success. Is the perception still that Shyiak prefers Canadian players? Do any American players walk on? Is there much hope these days for walk ons to advance to the varsity? Or does the coaching staff prefer 'their' recruits and leave walk ons on the scout team.
Just wondering.
The 2nd assistant position at UAA has always been and pretty much will always likely be a first step of sorts for guys getting on the NCAA coaching ladder. Coaching at UAA ain't a glamorous gig for anyone and has been one of the lower paying jobs in the WCHA over the years.
I'm sure some can blame Cobb for that but the truth is that more people would be bitching about any higher salary since it's a "state job". Of course, NONE of the money that pays state salaries comes out of ANYONE's pocket in this state. That doesn't stop the turd throwing conservamonkeys from throwing their shit.
The Seawolves will get a recruit from wherever but the reality is that the USHL is smack dab in the middle of the majority of D1 schools. There is also something that needs to be understood by anyone interested in the Seawolves recruiting ... local kids are not going to stay at either UAA or UAF in any numbers. Firstly, the local area doesn't necessarily produce much elite level talent on a yearly basis. There is are kids with upside and potential but as every coach that has ever been at the UAA helm knows ... kids who grew up in Alaska tend heavily to want to attend college outside the state.
Every UAA coach's winning percentage is pretty close.
Mike you are so wrong, the Stanley Cup was here last year during Hockey Week in Fairbanks. So nice try!
http://www.newsminer.com/view/full_story/11386592/article-Thousands-turn-out-for-Fairbanks%E2%80%99-first-visit-by-the-Stanley-Cup?
At least UAA won the Kendall and Goal Rush Tourney, as Donald says, so there's that. :)
Hey Suze; Who's got the Cup? WE got the Cup!! so there's that. RUB! RUB! RUB! LOL :) Oh, That's three years in a row. HA! HA! HA! more LOL.
82-52-11
Gotta look at the big picture and the big picture says UA_ has a long long ways to go to even get close to UAA
82-52-11 kinda says it all
Big picture is Alaska started playing Hockey in 1925 thats a long time befor UAA was was even a wet spot in Alaska. So there's THAT!"WE WIN AGAIN" LOL :)
If failbanks started playing hockey so much sooner then they should have a better record, eh?
82-52-11 Nuff said.
Hey guys, if overall record won you the cup then yeah it would matter but it doesn't...so move on. And you realize that overall record can easily be caught up to in a few seasons one we play each other 4+ times a year.
Fairbanks started playing much sooner and I would guess that they do have a better record in the long run. But, you know what? This is a great Hockey town, and we have a real Hockey history to be proud of. We have better fans and our team all around is better. We have more class, and we know our Hockey program is strong and improving all the time. So just go on being sorry haters, because that's all you really have. And keep on talking like that S.O.B. Donald he has taught you all very well. Good Luck, you WILL need it. I will not waste any more of my time on people like you.
Amanda, my bad. I checked the link. Thought maybe a local kid had won it with his NHL squad and brought it to Fbks....oh no that's Anchorage my bad again...lol
Anon 6:09 your Anon so that's all you really have. And good luck to you too.
It's still been here so you're first point is invalid. :p
I know....don't try and confuse me with facts.
Read Bruce Ciskie's blog about WCHA coach of the Year, especially the section on Mel Pearson. You see, changing a head coach can make all the difference in the world. After seven seasons of less than mediocrity, don't we deserve a change for the better at UAA?
Come on now!Really can't wait to her from all the trash talkers. What's the matter,Dump Bears hurt your feelings?
