Heisenberg Lists an 08 for UAA

Wizard of NCAA college hockey recruiting news Chris Heisenberg has listed 6ft 1in 198lb forward Tyler Moir from Drumheller in the AJHL as a new 08 recruit to the Seawolves. Tyler is the second leading scorer on his team and currently sits at #13 on the league scoring table with 12 goals and 27 assists in 29 games.

He was traded to Drumheller 16 games into the season from Drayton Valley Thunder; he spent the two previous seasons (05-06 and 06-07) seasons with them: in 90 games those seasons had 16 goals and 30 assists. In his first 16 games this season with Drayton Valley, Tyler scored 4 goals and added 15 assists. Since his trade to Drumheller he's been running riot; in 13 games he has 8 goals and 12 assists and the Dragons are 9-4 since then. Tyler's birthday is September 17th, 1988.

I'm not a close follower of junior leagues but check the AJHL tables often enough to have seen Tyler's name before. But that doesn't mean I know anything more about him than I've put above. I did read several nice comments from Drumheller fans about him on this message board. If you've seen him play and can describe his strengths and/or weaknesses please feel free to leave a comment.

Thanks Donald. Do you have the link handy for that message board? I can't seem to find mine for the AJHL, just the BCHL.

Is it just me or are our prospects pretty good but not a drastic improvement. The guy seems good but 13th in the AJHL in scoring is not knock your socks off type of recruitment. But we shall see. I am going to go look at what Glenncross did, because if my memory serves me right he came from the AJHL. But ideally I would like to see more quality USHL talent coming into the school, instead of pretty good Canadian B players.

Sorry I guess the AJHL is actually regarded as an 'A' Junior league but I am still not sure if this is the type of recruit that is going to keep us from being shutout almost every other game. Well, I just noticed another player that has been listed so I will check it out, and hopefully as we seem to be bringing many OK scorers it will help us, but I would still really like some game breakers and I think we need those guys.

A preference for USHL players? To come to UAA? Unwise. UAA's recruiting strategy is regional. Alaska and western Canada. With all the schools that already compete for USHL talent it would be foolish for UAA to spend much time or money chasing kids in that league. There's plenty of high quality (Tier 1 players) in western Canada when coupled with the Alaska has to offer and you've got a solid answer to the USHL Robot Factory. It makes sense both geographically and hockey wise.

UAA's record to date is:

8-0 (W)
5-2 (W)
4-4
4-3 (W)
5-3 (W)
2-2
0-2 (L)
5-3 (L)
4-4
0-3 (L)
4-2 (W)
0-1 (L)
1-4 (L)

So as you can see, UAA was shut out three times out of 13 games. Hardly every other weekend.

Shyiak and staff are doing a good job of recruiting. All you have to do is look at what their freshmen and sophmores are doing, and you can see he has the team going in the right direction.

Putting a good team together is more than recruiting just goal scorers.

Tyler is probably the top power forwardin the AJHL.Strong along the wall and very good skater with greatice vision and pretty goodhands. Tough to play against. should be a solid addition

Junior 'A' doesn't mean a whole lot these days. USA Hockey just restructured the system so that the bulk of what was once "Junior B" is now "Junior A Tier 3". Then you've got leagues like the WHA that just call themselves Junior A because they're affiliated with no governing body and can say whatever they want (but would a college actually recruit out of there? That's another question). So is a US Junior A league the same as a Canadian Junior A league, as a "rogue" Junior A league?

I think you really have to look at the individual players' talent instead of the league they're in. Just because they're in Junior X Tier Y doesn't mean a whole lot with every league out there billing themselves as something more than they are. I think there are a lot of good players who are playing in some of the "lesser" leagues and haven't made it the top level because of injuries, getting mixed up with shady teams, etc.

I think there's a lot of wasted potential out there, too. Watching some of the B leagues it seems like they're not trying to develop their players and send them on to the next level, every team is trying to stack their roster so they can win. But that's another can of worms all together. Junior hockey is just kind of a screwed up place, in my opinion.

Well I think that it is undeniable that the USHL puts our stronger hockey players. If we really want to start competing in WCHA we will need some of these players. The BCHL and AJHL put out good players but I think that to recruit almost entirely out of there is a mistake.

Secondly I would like to know how anonymous 12/6 @ 7:22 knows about this. Sounds like first hand knowledge which would be nice. I just looked through the stats of his, specifically at his penalties. They were very worrisome. The made him look like a goon. At least five games with 10 min. misconducts. Several checking from behind and checking to the head. Not only are these dangerous types of hits to be giving out, they can be very costly to your team in the NCAA. Of course we saw Kevin Clark taking a checking from behind penalty almost every game and he has improved on that.

Well I hope that he is a great power forward and not a goon, it did look like most of his penalties came before a trade and then with the exception of one game, toned down. Maybe, it was the style and the coaches. We shall see.

not a goon for sure but very tough to play against. a number of questionable calls arguably and dont forget they count game misc as 10 min pen too. definitely a stronger team when he is on the ice and not in the box. a lot of the pims are after the games not in doubt so not really hurt his team too bad except to say you dont want one of your best fwds in the box too much and he has been much better lately. got 5 pts in a recent 5-4 win so can put the pts up. Also think he scored 3 g and 1 a when coach Dave saw him play in AB awhile back. nice write up on his commitment to UAA on the AJHL and Drumheller site.
