First 09 Recruit: Gustav Bengtson

Since ignoring off-season stuff isn't working out quite the way I wanted, I figured I might as well post something that's interesting to me (while we continue to wait for an official announcement from Coach Shyiak regarding the 07-08 and/or 08-09 signees). Chris Heisenberg has added an 09-10 recruit for the Seawolves.

Gustav Bengtson is a 17 year old center (5'9" 165lb from Stockholm) who played this past season with the Northwest Regulators (Salt Lake City Midget AAA). He was just taken in the recent USHL draft by the Cedar Rapids Roughriders for next season. Gustav was the leading scorer for the Regulators with 36 points (17g-19a) in 34 games. In reading through their website it became apparent that the team was fairly competitive in some Midget tournaments. No doubt the next couple of years in the USHL will be telling in how much potential Gustav has to contribute to the Seawolves but here are some comments from his Coach (and the full article from the website):
“What sticks out for the scouts when they watch him are his tremendous skills”, stated Gronborg. “Gustav can be a dynamic player with his skating and stick handling at a very high speed."

"Mixed with being a very ‘coachable’ athlete you can consider him a ‘dream player’ for our staff. His commitment also shows in his approach to school where he is an honor student”

“Gustav was a pretty accomplished player when he came over to the US. However I would like to commend his work ethic on and off the ice especially in areas such as his defensive play, his play in traffic, and keeping a consistent high level of play, which he needs to continue to improve in order to make the next step. There is always a transition period for an European player to come over to play North American hockey and I think that Gustav has handled it great”

Any info on a goalie to replace Lawson yet? I heard UAA was looking at the Wildcats NAHL goalie for this year or possibly next year but don't know where that went.

I expect an addition or two to whenever they get around to making an announcement following the most recent signing period. It's typical that not much information about recruits ever makes its way out of UAA.

I don't know how much longer before they release something. Word leaked out they were finishing up and that then we could expect to hear. That was more than a couple of weeks ago.

does anybody know if there is interest in Bryce Christiansen? Apparently he was recruited by Minn. and looked to be a good prospect, but not great stats in USHL. Well hopefully we can bring a hometown kid in.

I also think Bryce is an excellent candidate. No doubt there are some rink rats in town that would know if he's been contacted. I'd expect he'll be playing in the SEHL as he did in the past summers. His dad played 4 years at UAA so I'd have to guess that there is some sort of contact.

Another good local goalie is Adam Murray who looks to be play on the U18 National Development Team next season (he joined that program a couple of months ago).

Are we all so sure that Nathan Lawson isn't going to be back? I'm not ...

For what it's worth...the kid from Wichita Falls is an 88 and has 2 years of juniors left. I have seen him play and look for him to step up to the USHL this year. I heard several eastern schools are looking at him for 2008 (Northeastern, RPI, Union, Harvard and Miami). There is also supposed to be a possible big time WCHA rival wanting him to stay in juniors till 2009 and then come aboard. Not sure how true that last statement is but I heard so I am just throwing it out there...

Johnny O and another source both told me that Lawson is heading out, so i'm pretty much convinced he's gone.
