New Recruit: Curtis Leinweber - Okotoks AJHL

Heisenberg has a new listing for the Seawolves on his 08 list. Forward Curtis Leinweber from the AJHL's Okotoks Oilers. Curtis is listed at 5'8" 169lbs and turns 20 on February 25th. He is in his thrid season with the Oilers and has 12g-31a in 41 games so far this year; 6 of his goals have come on the power play and he has 3 game winners. In 06-07 he put up 9g-18a in 57 games. His stats put him in the profile of having doubled his output from one season to the next which is always something that looks good to recruiters.

He is the 4th leading scorer on his team and 23rd on the league scoring chart. There isn't a lot of press about Curtis that I could find. His size and numbers would peg him as a bit of a playmaker. It appears he is also playing a left-wing lock role on the Okotoks team giving him some all-important defensive experience coming into the WCHA.

Most of UAA's players are big, I think we need a smaller, fast player. :)

As always, hanks for the heads up Donald!

Certainly doesn't appear to be a "Recruiting Coup" at first glance...

Someone call it a "recruiting coup"?

I think it's useful to realize that a successful team is comprised of many different cogs. I certainly could have pumped this kids tires a bit more than I've done. He is playing on a decent team and is a top offensive contributor while playing a defensive role. The WCHA has developed into a defense first league. Bringing in a kid that you don't have to teach to be responsible off the puck is filling a future need pretty nicely.

Here is an example to think about. Cade Fairchild, Mike Hoeffel and Patrick White were all presumed to be "studs" and elite players. I won't remark on their skill sets but none of them has done anything noteworthy in their first season, have they? Any chance that's because all three expected to come in and still be "studs" and instead have found themselves having to learn roles that they haven't had to fill before?

The fans in Okotoks like this kid. He probably should have gotten onto the AJHL All-Star roster. He looks like a good addition but as with any recruit only time will really tell.

Any word on why there was no coaches show on channel 1 last night? I wonder if they just didn't have time to do one, since it's normally taped on Tuesday and the team left early for CC.

The AJHL has been developing players very well. Okotoks is doing well, so Curtis should be more than prepared to make the jump to college hockey. Welcome Curtis.

This is a fans assessment of Chris:

"Curtis is a very quick and shifty player. He sees the ice well and generally makes good decisions with the puck. He is also able to find his way to the net and put the puck behind the goalie when he gets there. Is also strong along the wall. Fun to watch!"

Sounds solid to me, and exactly the kind of player I'd want on my team if I were the coach. Let's give Shyiak a chance to get his own guys in there.
