Larson and Scheid Commit To Seawolves

Forward Eric Scheid and defenseman Tony Larson from Blaine High School in Minnesota have verbally committed to play for the UAA Seawolves for the 2011-2012 season.

Scheid (5'9" 155lbs, May 92) finished the 09/10 season as the 2nd leading scorer on the Blaine squad with 55 points (23g,32a) behind Nick Bjugstad.  Larson (5'10" 175lbs, Oct 91) was the leading scoring defenseman with 32 points (6g,26a) for 5th on the team.

Both are expected to play in the USHL next season.  I don't follow discussions about Minnesota-based players since UAA typically doesn't recruit heavily there; so I invite some kind reader to submit whatever scouting info/knowledge they possess about these latest UAA recruits.

Eric Scheid and Tony Larson are two great kids and good students. They were rink rats growing up. Eric's father Jim played college hockey at the U of Wisconsin in Madison from 1976 through 1980.

This is a different recruiting path for this coaching staff...am I right on this? Have we taken any Minn kids out of high school before? We are outside the bun on this. Good to see something different.

The Blaine boys are both decent players but would not say they are the "high end" Minnesota high school player typically receiving scholarship offers at this stage of their career. I would have guessed that they would be more of a "watch and see" based on their progress at the next level. Blaine has had some equal if not better
talent come through their ranks in recent years that did not secure D1scholarships but I certainly wish these boys well. It's always good to see Minnesota kids playing in the WCHA.

I wouldn't expect them to be Nick Bjugstad. From what I saw on the Maple Grove/Blaine game that I linked was a nice little playmaker in Scheid.

As for Larson, he was thought of highly enough to be taken in the 4th round of the USHL draft by ...um ... I forget at the moment.

So yeah ... they probably weren't on Bucky or Goldy's radar; that doesn't mean they won't turn out to be good "gets". We'll see how they go in the USHL this season before we get excited.

I guess I am "excited" to see them pick up some guys that normally in past years we would not have looked at. Or looked at early.

For you diehards with time to kill, here is a link to some local cable access productions of a few of the Blaine games. I apologize in advance for the announcers. Just do a search for Blaine boys hockey.

Eric Scheid has speed going for him. He also sees the ice so well and makes great passes. He makes good dicisions on the ice. Good scouts recognized these qualities in him. He will only get better.
