UAF Accepts Invitation To Join WCHA

Less than 24 hours after receiving it,  the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks have accepted the WCHA's invitation to join and begin play in the 2013-14 season.  Good on them and welcome to your big brother's conference.

Here's the most relevant blurbs from the UAF release which came at 4:14 Thursday afternoon.
UAF Chancellor Brian Rogers noted that UAA athletic director Steve Cobb and Chancellor Tom Case were strong advocates for the Nanooks' inclusion in the WCHA conference.

“I would like to thank UAA for helping make this happen. Their work and support is an example of the community spirit that makes the University of Alaska great,” Rogers said. “We cooperate off the ice, and compete on the ice.”
This decision is just one part of the multiple changes spurred by the expected departures of Big Ten schools from the WCHA and CCHA as well as the subsequent back stabbing by the WCHA members of the new Butt Hurt Hockey Conference.

There is an unprecedented number of offseason things to offer commentary and perhaps analysis, so I'll get to that over the next few days.  There is of course all the regular things to consider and write about as we start this season.  Up next I'll post my annual welcome letter to the freshman class.  How many days til the first game?

"Good on them and welcome to your big brother's conference."

There are alot of advantages to having the Nanooks in the same conference as Anchorage Community College. It will give ACC students an opportunity to see what they can aspire to if they keep their noses clean, get good grades, and decide they want to transfer to UAF so they can major in something requires some intellect like science or engineering. Most important however is that being in the same conference will make the rivalry much more relavent and the crap flipping more fun. See ya in couple years.

Anonymous 8:46 ha ha ha you are so funny. Should I list all the bad examples UA_ students and staff has pulled off in the last 10 years? Maybe if some students did transfer you would win some basketball and volleyball games. Better go hack some more wood ....winter is on its way to the frozen smoke filled wasteland. Did you scam a free stove from the handouts the state was giving or you still using the _airbanks standard heating source? …..a barrel stove

BwaaahAAaahhaaa! 8:46 has to be from Bearflanks.. :D

They've been in the league all of ten minutes and the trash talkin' has already begun.

I don't care what the pissy-moanie people over at the USCHO forum say.. the new WCHA is going to be a blast! ♥

Charlie Sokaitis (KTUU Sports) wants locals to email, tweet, or facebook him and let him know how you feel about the Seawolves and Nanooks being in the same league.

Said he'll talk about the feedback he gets on tomorrow night's show.

Wow Mike, I have a little bit of fun with you and you get cranky and profane. I didn't realize I was being so hurtful. I guess from now on I'll say the same thing to you that I say to any UAA alumnus when I encounter them:

"Yes, I would like fries with my burger."

Alaska Hockey said...

4:13 So how long do you usually have to beg with your cardboard sign to afford a burger and fries ?

Fairbanks already has as many WCHA titles as UAA and they haven't played a conference game. How sad.

What's truly sad is the level of trash talk here. Seriously, UAF has as many WCHA titles???

That's just dumb. You're lucky it's preseason days.

I actually cant wait to see how UAA and UAF do once the WCHA goes to it's new form. UAF has recently picked up their program a bit and have made the NCAA tourney two season ago.

Wow Anon you come on Donald's UAA fanblog and try your hand at humor by throwing out some insults at UAA? Genius grad student huh? My post didn't mention you in any way shape or form, but you have no problem using me as your target. I'll tell you the same thing I tell all UAF grads. You have a customer that wants a new cell phone case at your mall kiosk. Fuck off there's some profanity directed right at you....

Donald Dunlop said...

Q: How do you starve a UAF Grad to death?
A: Hide the food stamps under the soap.

Will they be forced to officially admit they are indeed from Fairbanks? Or will they still be smug and ignore the fact that UAA and UAS are also University of Alaska?

Now that they'll be in the same conference, I'm betting people will start calling them Fairbanks. "Alaska's coming? Anchorage or Fairbanks?" Also, change the name of the Governor's Cup to the Alaska Cup.

Alaska Hockey said...

Anonymous 10:08 if forced to admit anything they will have to come clean and admit they from the hills of College Alaska. (West of the river banks of _airbanks and south of the woods of dog Patch)

I wouldn't doubt it if the 3 whole hours of sunlight Fairbanks gets in the winter causes delusions of grandeur...
