Seawolves Hire Ryan McKelvie

Regg Simon's departure less than a week ago has been promptly filled by NAHL Associate Head Coach Ryan McKelvie from the Wenatchee Wild.  McKelvie skated in the WCHA for Minnesota State from 2002-2006.  He then coached for 2 seasons as a graduate assistant at Bemidji State from 2006-2008 and spent the last two seasons coaching with the Wild.

Coach Shyiak said,
“We are getting an up and coming young coach who will be a big asset to our program. Ryan has all the attributes we were looking for in a coach and recruiter. We wanted someone who had ties to Minnesota, USHL and NAHL and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.”
McKelvie said,
"I am very honored and excited about this new opportunity. I’ve always been passionate about college hockey and about the WCHA. I know that coach Shyiak and coach Blair have done a great job with the program, and I look forward to working with them, the players and contributing to the team's success in any way that I can."
There's not a lot to analyze here.  McKelvie is young, has roots in a recruiting ground that UAA is trying to crack a bit more often.  And um ... they got it done fast; but we knew that was likely eh?  This is just a "proof is in the puddin" situation that doesn't really offer itself up for commentary.  We'll know how he's doing by the recruits he lands.

Best of luck to Ryan and we hope for a long and successful tenure here in Anchorage.  Do you think the first interview question was ... "Got all your frequent flier account numbers ready?"

Isn't Mankato UAA's biggest WCHA rival??? Or did someone just make that up?

Mankato is UAA's "designated rival" ... thank Don Lucia for coming up with that.

you really gonna blame Don Juan for that one?

We blame Don Lucia for everything....even the crappy summer weather. Welcome and good luck to Coach McKelvie.

bbef;
Lucia proposed the pairings for schedule purposes some years back and his plan was implemented by the WCHA. So yes, Lucia designated that UAA and Mankato be rivals.

Sounds like Lucia/Minnsota is the Mack Brown/Texas of the WCHA. Friggin prima donna's

Insidecollegehockey.com is doing their annual A-Z profiles of one player on each team. Any guesses who it may be this upcoming year?

I hate MSU-Mankato... That is my biggest complaint. All those lovely memories of the Purple Cows running Decaro and Lawson until they ran them out of the game injured. Yep that was Backes and the Purple Cow Crew.

Does UAA really have a WCHA rival?

DU and CC have a long term rivalry(270+ games and counting) and over the years the NoDakians have engendered deep seated enmity among the Pioneer faithful. But,for intensity the UAA-DU games at Magness over the last few years would be hard to beat.

The looks on the faces of the DU team skating the Mac Nothing around at Magness is really hard to beat. I would say it was priceless and showed the pretentious attitude of those skanks in Denver! Wait... maybe the look on my face the following night in Colorado Springs was more shocking?

Hey! I like the weather thing on the side of your page! Now when I get caught reading your blog at work... I can say I was checking the weather!

Yup, the weather is a nice touch, but I'd like it better if it said SUNNY!!!

No kidding! The only thing cheering me up these days is the notion that we are only a few months away from the start of the new college hockey season!
