Thoughts On Being Swept: UAH out UAA'd, UAA

I didn't give UAH anywhere near enough credit for their sweep of our boys this past weekend.  Specifically, they reminded me of some of the best play we saw from the Seawolves over the last decade.

In the old WCHA, the Seawolves were (much more often than not) the lesser talented team on the ice. This past weekend the Chargers were in those shoes. Like it or not, in the past seriously disciplined defensive "systems" used by Talafous and/or Shyiak resulted in some good wins for the Seawolves. This past weekend Mike Corbett had his "disciplined defensive systems" in place.

Now I get some small sense of what being a Minnesota Gopher hockey fan who watched the Seawolves sweep them. It blows. Well, at least losing to UAH wasn't in the playoffs on our home ice where we'd never lost before. Man, those were some awesome Seawolves squads. They effing gave it everyeffing thing that they had, didn't they?

There's enough season left for our team to pull it together and play up to their potential. I hope Coach has some tricks or systems or magic or whatever it takes to help/make them do so. But have no doubt that it's really up to the guys to decide to go out onto the ice and accept nothing less than a win. Guys have to rise up and play their best game each weekend. Nothing less will make the sort of difference needed to climb out of last place.

I have to mention ... UAF doesn't get to play in the playoffs this season. So playing for nothing other than pride, they've gone 12-8-0 on the season and are in 4th place and they just swept the team that swept UAA by a combined score of 14-2.

Now back to Mike Corbett for a second. Good on him and UAH so far this year. They've been in a lot of games this year and came up on the short end; 5 of their losses were by one goal. And this weekend Mike Corbett out-coached Matt Thomas and the Chargers out-played UAA. It gives them something to build on and I'd imagine it'll bolster their confidence.

Luke McColgan out of Chilliwack in BCHL listed as new commit to Seawolves.

This guy sounds like a high energy player!

Hard to say if Thomas was outcoached or not. Who's to say he had the perfect plan, but the team didn't implement that plan? Looking at the guys on the ice, they seem to have given up.

There is no jump in their skates, no blocking shots, no diving across the ice to get the puck out of the zone on a penalty kill .... nothing intense at all about the team. Let's hope they turn this around Thursday and Friday, or the stands may be down to 500 fans by the end of the season.

Thanks for the heads up on the rain, arcticfox. It's 29 in Palmer and not raining ... we will leave earlier than usual. Just noticed the error on the tickets again ... they say Friday 1/8 and Saturday 1/9. Sigh.
