Seawolves 4 - MTU 0: Well Earned and Deserved

If ever a hockey team deserved an outcome it was the UAA Seawolves tonight. So often I've echoed Coach Shyiak's assertions that the Seawolves are better than their record would indicate and tonight they were rewarded with a "W" for their outstanding effort. It wasn't the first time we UAA fans have seen our team outplay and opponent. But it was the first time in quite a while (I ain't looking it up) that we saw them get that "W" at home. Big huge well-earned congratulations to the team. Not a single skater in green and gold tonight looked as if they believed anything other than victory would be the result. Everyone looked confident. Everyone looked like they just were not going to be denied. And you know what? It's great to see them play that way and get the win. That'll make their late night pizza's taste better. That 3 Musketeers bar will be sweeter. Even a simple drink of cold water from the faucet tastes better tonight. UAA fan blog commenter and Chugiak resident Will Shaw (section 213, row 2) couldn't even jinx Jonny O with his talk of "shutouts" while there was still 14 minutes left in the game. Lucky for him that MTU didn't score otherwise he'd have walked out dripping from the Coca-Cola I would have dumped on his head!

Congrats to Jonny O on the shutout. Congrats to the goal scorers (Tarkir @ 4:46 of the 1st; Lunden @ 6:38 of the 1st; Waldrop @ 4:35 of the 2nd and Lovdahl @ 7:58 of the 2nd). 10 different players made it onto the scoresheet. Tarkir's goal was a result of going hard to the net following a shot. Lunden's goal resulted from quality cycling deep in the MTU zone and a sweet pass from Kevin Clark. Waldrop's goal came from a bit of a scramble in front and being in the right place at the right time. Lovdahl's goal was an absolute rocket from inside the blueline on the power play. Four completely different situations and all of them important lessons as well as something that has been preached by the staff. Work the puck deep, go hard to the net, play good positionally and shoot the puck. Sound simple? It is simple. Simple hard-nosed smart hockey well-executed in all phases. The hitting game was plainly evident and forceful all night long particularly in neutral ice and in MTU's zone. The Huskies trapped for the entire game but it never really presented a problem as the Seawolves skated through it and/or just forced their way through neutral ice. Defensively, the team was very sound. If there was a glitch or mistake then someone was there to cover it up. Once again the team did a good job blocking lanes and forcing the opponent wide. Of the 18 shots he faced probably only 3 or 4 were from prime scoring areas. And when a good shot did get through he was Jonny O on-the-spot. No sloppy rebounds; no juggled shots; a solid all around performance in the net and a shutout to show for it. Congratulations are certainly in order for that as well.

Congratulations, Seawolves fans! Definitely a well-earned victory by the better team.

Would've been a different story though had I been there staring my team down and yelling at them for sucking so bad. ...Or not. =P

This win is long overdue for the Seawolves and the Seawolves fans.

Tech wins tomorrow though. :)

Awesome victory! Congrats to Johnny-O and the boyz...

Glad we got the win but that had to be the worst ref job of the season! Our guys were taking the beating of a lifetime after the whistle and we'd come out with 4 minutes to their 2. I was wondering what was up until I read the sign on his back: SHEPHARD. Nuff said... Apparently when the sheep are out to pasture a Seawolf will do. What an idiot.

I'm sure Shep did the best job that he could. He's one of the best refs in the nation and in college hockey. I wouldn't complain too much if I were you.

Regarding crowd noise - they certainly were loud when UAA scored - which is always a great pat on the back for the home team.
Regarding Shepherd - he does work on his skills - every year there is some improvement in his ref skills.
Great game by all of the UAA players, may they do it again tonight.

The only call I was really confused with was when McCabe? (not sure who) hit Teslak's pads to try to knock the puck loose. The whistle had not blown yet, and players do that all the time. He was literally tackled to the ice by TWO Huskies, and yet UAA got 2 penalties to their one?

Congrats Seawolves! As far as the crowd, there were periods when it was VERY loud. It got kinda quiet when it was 4-0 and apparent that Tech wasn't going to mount a comeback.

szzz, there's an awful lot of bitching coming from you despite the fact that your team played very well last night and earned a much deserved victory. =P

Refs Refs Refs, give it a break. Tech was gooning it up a bit, but we have to use some self control out there. Retaliate and the advantage goes away. The reason why we sent two to the box that one time is because Lunden Slashed a Tech Player during the whole melee, not smart. Play the game, score goals, kill penalties and it will be alright.

Great win for the guys and for the fans too. Not to complain more about Shepard, but the guys won even with him being on the ice. To say Shepaard is one of the best refs in the nation is an insult to the rest of the refs in college hockey. Maybe it is just the way he calls the games in Anchorage. The win though is about the Seawolves and not the ref.

Sweep for the guys this weekend when they play another game tonight like last night.

The streak continues... UAA is now following in the foot steps of MTU, and MSU-M. After getting swept by UND they too are going on to have an excellent next series, oooohhh, this is a weird trend. We will have to what and see what happens tonight in Alaska.

After watch last weekends game UAA is not a bad, cellar quality team. They just haven't had the "puck luck" to win some close games.

Maybe the Gophers will throw in the towel in tonights game, so they can have good fortune the next weekend...my crystal ball is getting fuzzy, fuzzy....

Good post Donald, congrats to the wolves on the great win, to Johnny O and the defense for the shutout. Crisp stick to stick passing for all but some of the 3rd period stood out to me. I liked the line combos especially Waldrop with Crowder and Cartwright. I didn't notice the "crowd was sort of dead".........guess we were too busy enjoying the game.

Donald, if I don't see you before 6:30 when the Frontier Room opens, try to join us and Mr. & Mrs. huskyfan for dinner.

Neil,

Lunden didn't take a penalty all weekend, so I don't know what you were watching.
