The Alumni Update: Playoff version

It's playoff time around the world of the hockey and so on the heels of my favorite Mike Peluso moment let's take a look at whats happening with the Seawolf alums out there (and 2 current Seawolves playing for their National Teams). Unfortunately, with Calgary and Glencross out, for now no former Seawolves are in the Stanley Cup playoffs (with an injury or two Jay Beagle could be playing for the Caps but beyond that I don't see anybody else that could get a call up).

In the AHL the Calder Cup playoffs are underway with a couple of Seawolf vs Seawolf match ups. Jay Beagle and the Hershey Bears have a 3 games to 1 lead over Nathan Lawson and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Beagle has played in all 4 games but has 0 points and 0 PIMs, Lawson made the start in Game 2, making 30 saves to keep the game 2-2 but went off injured before the game winning goal. Kevin Clark's Mantoba Moose are down 2 games to 0 to Chad Anderson's Hamilton Bulldogs, Kevin has yet to play a game in the playoffs while Chad has 1 assist and 2 PIMs in his two games played. Luke Beaverson and the Rochester Americans are tied at a game each with the Abbotsford Heat. Luke has yet to make a playoff appearance.

In the ECHL, Trevor Hunt and the Stockon Thunder are the only team left with a former Seawolf in the ECHL playoffs, with the Aces (Lee Green, Justin Johnson, Merit Waldrop, Nils Backstrom, and Jon Olthuis) , Victoria (Walsky, 1G - 4A), and South Carolina (Carbury 0G - 0A) all out (Bryce Christiansen was released by Stockton on 4/12). Trevor is currently listed as inactive.

Finally, at the IIHF World Championships, Division I Group B Luka Vidmar and Slovenia are 2 - 0, beating Poland 3 - 2 and Croatia 10 - 1. Luka has played in both games with no points, 2 PIMs, and 6 SOG. Next game for Slovenia is Tuesday against Great Britain. Meanwhile today, Mitch Brujistan and The Netherlands play their first game in Group A against Japan at 8:30pm Central European Time (or 10:30am Alaska), the IIHF has live stats on their website.

And finally, it yet another blow to Forrest Karr and TAFKAF's never ending quest to be the Alaska Nanooks, Luka Vidmar is listed on the Slovenian roster as from the... University of Alaska.

Edit: I added the Luka picture below since folks were having difficulties accessing it at the IIHF site.  Man ... someone crushed him.  From the damage, I'd say he got hit head high from his left side which would account for the ding on his cheek and black eye; while his right shoulder must have been driven into the boards.  With it slinged I'd assume at minimum some sort of shoulder separation which is common in that sort of hit.

Bruijsten didn't make the final roster for The Netherlands. Vidmar though played regular shifts in both Slovenia games.

Good luck to Clarky ... I'll be listening to "all the action" on Manitoba Moose Radio CJOB ...

And an update on Luka Vidmar and Slovenia in the Division 1 Group B Final game ... Slovenia beat Hungary today 4-1. Vidmar did not play in game 4 or 5 of the tournament and Slovenia on dressed 5 defenseman prior to that.

It looked to me that Luka was skating on the first pairing so his absence and only 5 dressed blueliners tells me he was hurt.

So lets hope whatever injury it was turns out to be not too serious. I couldn't find a report on it specifically.

Now that I mentioned that I went and looked again and found the photo gallery for the tournament. If you click on this link you should find a picture of Luka in street clothes on the bench and the reason he didn't play will be very obvious.

OUCH Luka ... dunno what freight train hit you but dude .... get well soon.

for some odd reason, I couldn't see the pics..
Also, Kevin and the moose beat the bulldogs tonight so they are off to hamilton for game six. Great Job Kevin!!! We'll be looking forward to watching you play on sunday night. All the best from your fans in Alaska.Go Seawolves!!!

I like volleyball and all, but seriously???

For those who want to see the pic in a full window, click on the link to the Group B page, click Pictures, and filter teams to SLO. Luka is on page 4. Blogger is being weird and won't let anybody adjust the window size. He's got a swollen face with a nasty bruise and an arm in a sling. Not pretty.

It seems that Luka would've been injured in the game against Great Britain, a 4-3 OT win for Slovenia, a game that seems to have been a close fought, rough game (GBR tied with less than a minute to force OT). The only thing I could see in the stats was a 2 and 10 to GBR's Ashley Tait in the first period, but Luka is credited with a shot in the 3rd, so who knows.

Good news is that Slovenia won the group and promotion to the 2011 World Championships. Great for Luka and Slovenia. I'd say he's got a very good chance to play for them next year at the Championships.

Derek Docken will be playing in the USHL (Dubuque)
next season.

Anonymous said...

Hopefully Docken gets a fair amount of playing time and can prepare himself for the WCHA. That should be a very good move for him and UAA.

No new blogs make me sad :( Why won't one of you pie eaters help Double D out???

agreed

Kevin Clark is healing up well from his hip pointer injury. Moose ahl definitely want clarky back. He is waiting a few weeks to make his final decision. Agent working on other offers. Always nice to play in your hometown though.

Glad to hear that news about Kevin, will
he be graduating tomorrow with the rest
of the seniors? We wish all of them the
very best and hope to watch them all
next season wherever they may be.
Go SeaWolves!!!!!

Here is an article about Docken going to the USHL next season:

http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=279429

""Coach (Joe) Coombs did a wonderful job of identifying Derek as a player who could be a shut-down defenseman for us," Montgomery said. "When I went to watch him play, I knew after two shifts he was someone we'd want to be one of the pillars to our team to start with".

I spoke with Dan Kamal today. They are very excited to have Kris come to UAA. I suggested that if he comes up for Parent night, that he should sit in a period on the radio broadcast. He said that he has always wanted to broadcast on of Chris's games.

Suze said...

How cool would that be? But Kurt is "da man". :)

I'm not even a UAA fan but will donate a 20 spot to see those double D's again!!!

How much fo a lap dance Donald?

Anonymous said...

Does anybody know where Matthew Friese will be playing next year?

Anonymous said...

If it's not for UAA I could care less. What the hell happened this time?

Suze said...

Friese was drafted by Tri-City, so he could play for them or the Avs next season.

I know that other WCHA schools were recruiting him, but he sounded very excited to play for UAA (he wanted to play in the WCHA), and play where his family and friends could watch him. This makes no sense at all.

Hopefully this is just rumor.

Donald Dunlop said...

Friese played 2 games for Tri-City this year so i'd assume that's where he'll turn up. He isn't scheduled to come to UAA until 2011.

There is a rumor that he has rescinded his verbal commitment and I have two separate sources essentially confirming that.

The school is barred from commenting on verbally committed recruits by the NCAA. Let's keep the speculating about it to a minimum though here ... eh? 16, 17 and 18 year old kids change their minds about stuff. It happens.

This is anon 4:58 on the 9th and I was just asking since he had played in the USHL. I was thinking a year in the USHL would be good for him. Not meaning to bring up any speculation.

Anonymous said...

Well it looks like Friess is officially decommitted. ADN blog had quotes from the young man saying he is looking for other schools. Even though he is young and can change his mind this is a huge loss to UAA. Local boy doesnt want to play for the Seawolves and Shyiak.

Anonymous said...

If he does not want to be here then he shouldn't come. Coach Shyiak and staff will go and get another solid recruit.

Donald Dunlop said...

Yeah ... because ...

""I've played in Alaska my whole life and I want to get out and play Outside, and hopefully get a scholarship to play hockey Outside. Nothing against UAA. UAA is a great program and a great team. I'm a teenager. I want to get out and see what's out there.''

... filtered through your lens means he doesn't want to play for the Seawolves and Shyiak.

Let the guys speak for himself. He stated his reasons clearly. They are no different than reasons we've seen from lots of local players who choose to play D1 at outside schools. And that has occurred with EVERY coach UAA has had.

It's geographical and nothing else. I should have deleted you comment but chose to answer it as an exposition to others that think they might come here and spin this or that story to suit themselves. That ain't gonna happen here.
