Host David Tuttle informs me that The Coach Shyiak Show will return for it's 2nd season tonight at 7PM (ummm ... maybe 8PM) on GCI Channel 1 (Edit: The Show will be on Thursday Night at 8PM). Last year's show provided a lot of insight into the program for us fans. I'd expect the same sort of straight-talk from the Coach this season. Each show last year also featured a player interview segment where we got to know many of the players better. David does a great job with this show and I know the UAA JPC Department work their collective butts off to produce this show. Here's a reprint of an article I did last December for the Bluliner Booster Club Newsletter:
The UAA School of Journalism and Public Communications is the source for two fine broadcasts Seawolf Hockey fans enjoy throughout the season. In addition to the game broadcasts we enjoy from the Sullivan Arena, this season the JPC has added the Coach Shyiak Show to it's list of credits. The Seawolf weekly release is up on the UAA website. Here's a link to that article. Props for the always stellar job by the External Affairs Sports Information folks headed up by the always hard working Nate Sagan.
Dr. Fred Pearce (JPC Department Chair) graciously explained that in partnering with GCI the goal of both productions is to provide a meaningful experience for the students involved; as well as provide the University with an outlet which highlights it's accomplishments to the community. Those experiences will translate directly for any of these students who's future includes a career in television or multimedia production.
As director and producer of the game broadcasts Dr. Pearce works with Professor "Red" Bradley managing the crew and Glen Coulson heading up the technical effort. The rest of the staff (camera and audio) is made up entirely of students. Leveraging existing equipment to it fullest potential, the broadcast's quality goal is to be equivalent to that of a (as designated in the TV industry) small market production.
For the game broadcasts Dr. Pearce estimates that 40-50 person-hours are required. The students involved (8 to 9) thankfully do receive payment from GCI for their labor. The broadcast is expertly hosted by veteran radio play-by-play man Kurt Haider and color commentary is provided by JPC-major David Tuttle who graduates from that program this coming spring.
David also hosts The Coach Shyiak Show. The show is recorded on Tuesday afternoon directed by (the always helpful) Glen Coulson. Not only does David host, he is the producer as well. Somebody sure sounds like a lock for an "A" this semester ... eh? ... Professor Bradley, Dr. Pearce? The show airs on GCI Channel 1 each Wednesday at 8PM before every series. It is repeated in the half hour preceeding the live Friday and Saturday night game broadcasts.
A big thanks and much appreciation for all these folks fine efforts. Without their toil our experience as fans would be diminished.

Well that sure didn't happen.
I was looking for it but wasn't too interested in gathering information about smoking.
I don't understand why JPC depends on GCI to make this happen when RIGHT ON THE CAMPUS is KAKM which already broadcasts the KUAA stuff on Channel 9.
1. Produce the show
2. Walk the tape over to KAKM
3. KAKM Ops ingests the program and puts it in the schedule on Channel 9.
4. We watch
I don't get it.
GCI is the sponsor which is why they are the ones who are airing it. Just like with the games themselves. I will look into it and find out any info that I can. Also, Kurt will be hosting the show for the next 3 weeks as I am headed to Germany on Monday and won't be back until the 2nd.
Oh and Donald you were only slightly off...I was supposed to graduate in the spring...I took the walk but I still owe Dr. Pearce 1/2 of a research paper before we can call it official!
Okay, last one for the night. According to GCI's listing the show will air tomorrow (Thursday) at 8.
Yay GCI! If it wasn't for that annoying guy that was on Seinfeld once I might not believe they are a legitimate company that doesn't only survive because they're schiesters and have little or no competition.
Thankfully DirectTV and Dish Network finally got up here. They've been putting a bit of a dent in GCI's cable market share. There's also a good alternative now for Broadband service which should cut into their Cable Modem business.
The thing about GCI, though, is that they trick customers into buying crappy services. I remember when they were selling cable modem service capped at 56k. For grandma who checks her e-mail once a day she probably thought "oh I have cable modem, my internet is fast, it's worth paying extra for." There's something to be said for shopping around and comparing services but not everyone knows what to look for, and GCI preys on those people.
So anyway, how about hockey?
Any body got the inside on the lines for Friday and the Goalie Battle ???
Hey Dunlop,
I heard the real reason you can't come back to Fairbanks is you were cited for soliciting sex..From a straight hitchhiker who ended up beating you up! haha When you reported the assault was not the ass-ault you were hoping for the police laughed and told you to just get lost. hahahah
I think it is probably a good idea if you stay in Anchorage - there is not much of a homosexual community in Fairbanks and definitely no gay bars. Oh you already know that don't you? So no hard feelings but please be honest in describing why you don't like that town.
