According to UAA Head Coach Matt Thomas, the Mt. Royal Cougars from Calgary, Alberta are not to be taken lightly. They got a new coach last year and the team fully bought into his system and they finished their season 17-11. They didn't have a lot of player losses and have brought in a former CJHL Player of The Year to bolster the lineup.
The team is a somewhat even mix of Jr. A and Major Junior players including many players who wouldn't look out of place on a WCHA team. In past seasons we've seen different levels of play from the Canadian teams we've played in exhibition. Most indications for Mt. Royal peg them as likely one of the tougher teams we've played.
I sure hope so. It's better for the coaching staff evaluating our guys if the squad gets a legitimate test. The Cougars have played 3 games this season. Lost their opener to Calgary 3-2. Won their 2nd game in OT 5-4 versus NAIT then lost to NAIT 8-4.
Today was their travel day. Then tomorrow's game before heading to Squarebanks for a Saturday night game.
Players to watch:
#27 Cody Cartier (5ft, 9in 180lbs) -- led the team in scoring last season w/ 39 points in 28 games (14g-25a).
#23 Tyler Fiddler (5ft, 11in 185lbs) -- 2nd in scoring with 31 pts in 28 games (8g-23a).
#22 Matthew Brown (6ft 200lbs) -- was 3rd in scoring (2nd in goals) last season with 13g-10a.
#15 Cam Maclise (6ft, 3in 195lbs) -- transferred from New Brunswick after being the CJHL Player of the year in 2013-14 with the Brooks Bandits.
Please note that the Game Day section will not be active for this exhibition game. Also, I will not be attending the game (working and didn't find a ride anyway).
