Seawolves Dominate The Pioneers 7-3

The difference between last night and tonight (aside from the score)?  The Seawolves perservered through some headshakingingly ridiculous penalty calls and figured out a way to win.  Several UAA players were outstanding all night and rate an early mention here for their play.

Sean Wiles had a monster weekend.  He was active and effective and dangerous on Friday but tonight he owned.  He was unstoppable.  No doubt about it in my mind ... he was the player of the game.  Somebody better get him a beer.  Two somebody's ought to get him a beer.  I haven't looked at other weekend results closely but Wiles sure looks to be a good WCHA Offensive Player of the Week candidate with his three really sweet goals on both nights.  I really see some burgeoning confidence in him.  This weekend's performance is hopefully the beginning of a "breakout" year for him.

Nick Haddad put together two great nights of play this weekend.  He was simply awesome on the multitude of PK's that UAA faced all weekend.  He was an ongoing scoring threat skating his regular shifts as well.  I think he played two of the best back-to-back games of his career.  It's amazing that he didn't get his name onto any of the 9 UAA weekend scorelines.  He deserved some points for his efforts.

Mickey Spencer played the best two games of his young career.  His hustle and solid work led to Sean Wiles 1st goal though he didn't pick up an assist for it.  He also sent Wiercioch into the DU bench with a check in the first period.  He was active all over the ice playing well defensively and offensively.  He's really come on strong.  It's good to see.

There were two great hits in the game (both the best of the season so far).  Chris Crowell blasted Paul Phillips out of his skates (Kurt Haider said, "He blew him up") on the forecheck late in the 2nd.  From my angle it looked like one of those special effects in the movies where some poor bastard takes a shotgun blast to the chest and gets yanked flying backwards by wires.  It was a classic big time hit.  The second was the beautifully timed hip-check from Kane Lafranchise on Patrick Wiercioch which sent the Ottawa draft pick on an end-over-end flip.  It was ridiculously and incorrectly called a "clipping" infraction.  Clipping?  Nope ... (whatever that is).  Just a well executed hip-check and nothing else.

Bryce Christianson was sharp in the net.  I don't think he had to come up with as many big saves as Jonny O on Friday but obviously the offensive support of 7 goals makes a difference.

Referees Justin "the clown" Brown (#5) and Brett "make up for the other idiot zebra" Kloslowski (#31) were maddeningly bad all weekend.  Phantom calls, bad interpretations and an overall apparent desire to insert themselves into the game seemed to be some sort of trio-mantra.  Pitiful refereeing.  Shyiak noted immediately after the game how it seemed to take forever everytime these two buffoons (all my words here) had to figure out any discrepancies.  He correctly pointed out that Wiercioch was ready to go on the next shift after the "clipping" call on what Dave also correctly pointed out was a clean hip-check.  I'd say that Wiercioch "coaxed" the 5 minute major by his immobility act after the check.

Am I saying he was faking?  Yep.  How can I say something so outrageous?  Well ... before play resumed ... Weircioch was lined up with the the rest of DU's power play.  He was ready to go without missing a beat.  The referee showed him the way to the bench for being so cheeky as to think he could just keep playing after his three minute rest.  When play restarted, Weircioch was back on the ice within 40 seconds of the start of the power play.

The Seawolves though managed to find the necessary character to overcome it all.  Everyone deserves a pat on the back for their efforts.  I thought Nils Backstrom and Trevor Hunt were solid all weekend.  Jared Tuton was more noticable this weekend.  His play so far this year has been "quiet-steady" but tonight in particular he made more noise.  Luka Vidmar had his two best games of the season after missing the last five with a groin pull.  He looked more focused and was hungry offensively.   Lee Baldwin is no longer a rookie.  He didn't take hardly any time to adapt and is a clear asset on the blueline.  His sweet one-timer in the 3rd put the game out of reach.  He had another solid weekend picking up that goal and two assists tonight.

I'm not sure whether to lump Curtis Leinweber in with the defensive kudos or to include him in the comments about forwards.  In either case, he remains one of my favorite UAA players.  He's quick and dynamic and I always love a guy like that. He showed great eye/hand coordination knocking in his goal off the shaft of his stick.  Daniel Naslund picked up his first goal of the year on a real nice tip from a smart Vidmar shot.  I know I was harsh about Naslund's skating last weekend so I'm glad he was more effective this weekend and made me look bad for dogging him.  His size is a definite asset and he does have really sweet hands.

Craig Parkinson and Alex Gellert were both solid.  Chris Crowell (like Lee Baldwin) shouldn't have to carry the rookie tag anymore either; his monster check I mentioned earlier was highlight reel stuff, I'll make sure and nab it when GCI archives these games.  Josh Lunden scored the last goal of the night on a superb individual effort.  Doncha think Tommy Grant can really turn on the jets ... eh?  Both of those guys will score more often than they did this weekend.  With them not lighting it up though, it's even more satisfying to see the Seawolves rack up a 7 spot on the #2 team in the country.  That kind of secondary scoring is exactly what is going to be needed all year long.

And oh yeah ... Tyler Ruegsegger is the biggest crybaby, worst sport in the WCHA.  He really ought to be sanctioned for his two attempted slashes after the game ended.

Here's the boxscore.

Congrats on the thrashing UAA. It is definitely tough playing on their home rink.

And no I'm not talking about having to travel to Anchorage etc.

Anyone know why Bruijsten disappeared from the game for so long? He reappeared to serve the major for Kane and then got the assist as he came out of the box.

I think he just wasn't very effective tonight. He had a couple of decent forechecking efforts. Shyiak historically gives freshman lots of ice time early in the season. The ones that adapt/perform well keep playing. Based on that I think we can expect to see Ken Selby on the road trip to Wisconsin and probably play both nights.

Oh yeah, where in the heck has mr. haddad been. He has been stoic on the PP and PK, not the master skater, but man, he's been on this season. And Mr. Baldwin, he's the real deal for sure.... 3 frosh starting?, message for the team? Anyway, I forgot to mention Mr. Wiles, terrific weekend and overall effort, that 'unassisted' goal, was ALL him...outworked, outplayed, out err scored the damn goal. lol Did I say Mr. Baldwin is the real deal? Yes, I said it twice.

Uno mas,

Welcome home Murray! Leave the state u pay the price...lol

Lesson to all those who may leave AK to play elsewhere... we will FIND U!

Gwoz is really a douche though, u replace the GT after the 6th! goal!, In the 3rd! period. After he'd already started it! Leave the kid in, make some saves, get confidence. No, pull, sit, ponder. Great coaching.

Donald Dunlop said...

In fairness to Gwoz (not saying that he isn't a douche) it could be just as much about getting his #3 guy some playing time. He may very well need him to play again.

Thank you seawolves from the many many Sioux fans.

So much for "skating circles around the Seawolves". I am a little disappointed we lost Friday but a split -- composed of a tight game Friday and a BLOWOUT Saturday -- should be enough to assert ourselves at least.

7-3, how sweet is that? UAA is back on track, and ready to roll. F*&K all the naysayers. GO SEAWOLVES!!

I was really upset when Murray turned down UAA for DU. But after seeing his performance, DU can have him. He's a seive.

GREAT game Wolves. Now go to Wisconsin and SHUT THE CROWD UP!!

Awesome game... Its great to see scoring coming from all through the lineup. This should be a great confidence builder for the guys. They got some bounces to go their way and piled up the score. I wasn't at the games but sounded like Spencer and Wiles had breakout weekends. Good to see Clark, Lunden, Leinweber score too..

Welcome home Murray...

Be careful about how you call the game, Donald. Our "fan" dude will call you a whiner for complaining about the reffing. Of course he is rarely there to see it for himself.

Nice to see the boys rewarded. Play top teams and stay with 'em, like we've done to begin the season, and the playing field becomes more and more level. That's sport. Seawolves are a bunch of kids who for the most part were overlooked early in their minor hockey careers. Shyiak recruits these boys because he sees something. Sure they can't skate, shoot, or score according to some here, but they did manage to make the Sodbusters happy to get out of town. (Time to pile up some wins, eh, On Wolves?) Believe this: none like to play the Wolves because they play old-fashioned Canadian hockey. Legend Conn Smythe said, "If you can't beat 'em in the alley, you can't beat 'em on the ice." In the end the Sodbusters were a beat up team--just like last year's playoff. When you lie on the ice after a hit and show up on the powerplay, you are a done team.

And while I'm just a dumb Canuck, this must be said: what's with NCAA refs? Like do they just not understand the game or what? That performance last night was probably the worst of a long line of bad. That no. 31 was liking the camera way too much. -30-

The reffing was horrendous, as witnessed by the entire UAA fan base. I'm glad that the league reviews games on Sundays, because #5 should not ref another game this year.

Go ahead dude, call me out like you did repeatedly on the USCHO scores thread last night. You are pathetic.

JSthlin said...

You are right about the NCAA refs. Last night they did everything they could to help Denver back into the game, short of kicking in the puck themselves.

Awesome to see Sean have a great weekend, he puts in a lot of effort to get into good position and misses the net with his shot, but not this weekend. Unfortunately, I was on the glass where he decided to celebrate his 2nd goal, and I think he hurt his shoulder in his exuberance. Went to the bench testing it, never skated another shift, hope he didn't set himself back to far, as it is looking like a great year for him.

Great game by all the seawolve players, nice to see the seniors step up last nite. Bryce played well in net. Eighth place now, slowly move up to 5th or 6th.
This team has the potential now to make things happen.
Clark played his style last nite, he and others sure rattled denvers players.
Hats of to shyiak for adjusting his game plan.
Bring on wisconsin.

Fantastic game...with our defense comeing together the entire teams confidence has soared, My only complaint from last nite was the classless Burgandy Brew losers screaming profanity and throwing middle fingers at seawolf fans...IN OUR HOUSE! There is a special place in the darkest corner of Hell for you fellas

I was oh so gloriously wrong... last night. I hope it continues, but I also remember this happening once or twice the past few years. That being said, I hope it continues for the rest of the year.

And -30-, keep my handle out your mouth, just give up. For someone who isn't able to negotiate the simple technology necessary to post a comment under your name, and instead write a number at the end of your posts, you sure have a lot to say. Stop acting as if I'm eating crow and look at the record. I will happily devour crow, or any other bird of prey, if we finish above 9th place in the WCHA. (and yes, I'm aware that not everyone regards crow as a bird of prey) Honestly, we split at home... that is not good.

All told, that was a great game last night. Keep it up boys.

Does anyone have a video of that hipcheck Lafranchise threw? It should be on Youtube immediately! Post the url when it comes up.

GO WOLVES!

Congrats to the Seawolves. You guys whupped our butts in the second half of the game for a well-deserved split.

We had a pretty good nine year run at the Sully without a loss, but it had to end sometime, and you boys deserved it.

Good luck the rest of the way.

The first six games in the wcha were against top teams. Let's make the sully the toughest place to play for our opponents.
Let's get fans out when minnesota state comes to town.

UAA Fan in Florida said...

ok, i'll buy that for a dollar...

I admit, I didn't think of it like that...

I think that we were sidetracked as a team in the early stages of Shyiaks career when Matt Gordon got hurt. He was awesome and J.O. wasn't ready to take the full load..

I mean we got B.C. out of it, and he's pretty darn good(awesome game saving save of the ROCK in the
2nd), but Matty showed some great possibility... anyway, good game guys, learn from this and prosper against the big W this week..

pst, they have a shitty gt also.. lol

(I wasn't going to erase this after I wrote it all, but I respect the Puck Swami and his congratulations to us was genuine. So, good game on your boys as well, I think that Bryce prolly stole that game with the stop on the ROCK, point blank. Momentum seemed to change at that point.) See you in the final 5!

We were out shot all game...goaltending matters and will continue to be an enigma until a decision is made. Both guys have played well though...Remember the second half last season some one needs to get hot...That being said what in the hell did those dipshit Coachs for Denver tell that Murray kid when they conned him into coming to Denver at 18 years old with one mediocre year in the North America league..They are Crazy if he would have been better off watching Chevrie for two years then after sitting and not developing think he could be a starter in the WCHA..I see another Drew OConnell debacle where he left way to early thinking he was special and those Coaches and advisors were Hallucinating or just flat out wrong..Prove your self as a bonifide starter in a pressure situation like on a USHL team or similar. I am pulling for you Adam but your career was risked by awful bad advice...18 and a Goalie in the WCHA...Why..why would you not let him play two years of juniors ...ok then have him play at least one year of Juniors then get him seasoned for a year under Chevrie..Man I am pulling for you Adam but I am also shakin in my boots for your Career as 18 is way to young for that position in the WCHA..

On Wolves: Perhaps I've been a little harsh. Sorry. I promise to keep your handle out of my mouth in the future (that doesn't sound quite right, does it?). And just for you, I've got my moniker front and center.

UAA did a number of good things this weekend.

We started to win a lot more face offs especially when they mattered.

We played hard along the boards and started to play physical again.

Crowell, Gellert and Baldwin are starting to figure to learn the NCAA game and their confidence is growing.

I LOVED our PK, we finally started to attack the points and challenge along the boards instead of falling back into a box. It took 5 X 3's for Denver to score easily.

We moved the puck better on our PP's as well.

Getting Vidmar and Hunt back on the ice for a few games is really making a difference too.

This weekends effort and attitude is what I expect every game. I have been impatient this year, but still very hopeful. I am glad these guys stepped up and shut me up about some of the things I said in the past week. I won't be so harsh and quick in my criticism in the near future. It may be tough at times if this team lays an egg, especially now knowing how well this team is capable of playing.

Suze, I don't recall calling you out on the USCHO boards. I guess if what I said felt personal to you, than that is your problem.

Great article on the wcha site, we are finally starting to get the regogniton our team deserves.
Nice picture of clarky, the whole team played fantastic this weekend.
Anchorage should be proud.
All the best in Wisconsin.

I didn't want to admit it, but that's pretty funny. It made me laugh.

Whats the status on the video of that big hoser Lafranchise destroying the DU faker?

Donald, about your quote "Referees Justin "the clown" Brown (#5) and Brett "make up for the other idiot zebra" Kloslowski (#31) were maddeningly bad all weekend" - -

You are SO correct. #5 called almost all of the penalties on UAA, and #31 then called ridiculous make up calls. Those two were quite a team. Your comment yesterday that the premier teams getting all the calls is spot on.

They should continue to be called on the carpet for the bull calls, why should fans look the other way?

Great win for the Wolves. Hope Wiles isn't hurt too bad. Coach at the end of the game said he thought Sean dislocated his shoulder. If you watch at the end of the game when the teams shake hands he used his left hand.

The guys should have confidence going to Wisconsin where they can get points.

Suze said...

I agree Will, Sean is key to UAA's success right now, and he is from Wisconsin. I'm sure he wants to play really bad in this series.
