Still Stretching

The Sports Information Department at UAA has posted the weekly release (PDF). In case you're not familiar, they do this every Wednesday during the season. The release always contains tidbits of news and up to date information. One section this week mentions that the UAA Coaches Show will be airing tonight on GCI channel 1 at 8pm. David Tuttle will again host Coach Shyiak in a review of this past weekends games. It says the show each week will be 30 minutes and will also feature a player. I called the JPC office and they told me the player to be featured this week is Josh Lunden.

Coming up with new and unique ways to talk trash about UAF isn't as easy as you might think. I've given them a rash of crap about their new boat a few weeks ago. Last year before the first two games I went all Dickens (at least with my post titles) and did some comparing both fictionally and non-fictionally. This past summer I wrote a letter to UAA's incoming freshman that included the following:
We hate Fairbanks ergo you hate Fairbanks. OK? Seriously, we never want to lose to them again. You don't either. On board with that? The "Governors Cup" is a big deal to UAF fans and denying them it, is why you're here. Following the the general trend now? Seawolf > Nanook. It's just that simple. Ingrain it on your psyche. Burn it in your memory. Never forget. They hate freedom. We love freedom. Fairbanks bad. UAA good. The ticket is free to get on the "Hate-FBX" bus, so jump on it and stay on it. Comprende? Ok then ... the less said about Fairbanks the better.
So the problem here for me is to give readers something fresh while still not letting Fairbanks off the "you guys suck" hook. But the reality is that I don't know much about this years version of the Nanooks. They've got a new coach, Doc Delcastillo and so will likely have a new personality as a team. The one tidbit that has managed to make itself known is that he has the squad focused on taking as few penalties as is possible. The word is that if you get your stick horizontal across a teammate in practice, then you're skating some penalty drills. So perhaps he's a rigid disciplinarian? Perhaps its a bit early to make that call but if any program ever deserved to have a control freak at it's helm I'd have to say it's UAF. Like I said though, it's a bit early to make such characterizations. You can be assured though that the minute he smells like Dean Talafous to me I'll be all over it.

I'll do some more research and have a real preview of the 'nooks tomorrow.

#1 reason to hate UAF Hockey is them calling themselves "Team Alaska". It pisses me off enough that they have a crappy amusement park called "Alaskaland" up there. I think they should rename it to "Fairbanksland". I know one thing that won't be on display in "Fairbanksland" and that's the Gov's Cup.

Alaskaland... it's just like Disneyland.... except it sucks.

I think that they actually changed the name of alaskaland to pioneer park or something.

Does the Gov. show up this weekend?

A little off topic but DTP what did you think of Jason Towsley from RMU? INCH named him player of the week.. I always gotta love when a player makes me look like I know something... Anyways go UAA kick some UAF ass.

We have dead air on channel 1, anyone else getting the Coaches Show?

Check my minute-by-minute account of the non-broadcast over at the fan forum.

Summary: I'm betting it was a GCI operations foul-up.

I called GCI and they said they have no control over it, since it is broadcast from UAA.

Is it me or does the Squarebanks Coach look like Yoda?

I directed the "The Coach Shyiak Show" for this week. I can tell you the mistake was not at UAA's end, as the show is shot on Tuesday morning and delivered no later then Wed. morning at 10AM. GCI said they had a problem with their playback unit, and the show rolled 18 minutes after 8pm. I wasn't there so I don't know. I can tell you this, my message machine was on fire when I got home after work with cranky friends looking for the show. If anybody has a beef take it up with GCI, the production team at UAA did their part. Look for the rebroadcast at 7:00pm Friday, and again 10pm just before the game is scheduled to air. Go Seawolves!

Glen,
I specifically asked the GCI guy at their technical support desk if the took a feed from you guys via either microwave or fiber and he said that was how they did got it. I'm thrilled to hear that you deliver the show on tape to them though.

That leaves no excuse for not playing the whole thing. An TV operator that starts a tape playback and then doesn't confirm it is playing by checking an "air" monitor isn't doing his job.

They should have aired your entire show. If they told you it started 18 minutes in they were lying to you. The ONLY thing that aired was about 00:02:30 of Josh Lunden's interview portion at the end. In fact, I can tell you that it started with David Tuttle asking Josh a question about whether his sisters would be attending the parents weekend.

If you click on the link on the blog here for the UAA Fan Forum and read the Coaches Show thread you'll find my minute by minute accounting of what transpired when I called them. Feel free to copy it and forward it to their Operations Supervisor if he tells you that 18 minute BS.

Looks like the Roadrunners fans aren't too crazy about the Law. He allowed 6 goals in his last game and they called him "abysmal".

Yoda, TFF!
GCI don't care, what are we going to do take our business somewhere else?

The partnership with GCI has been a good one over the years. We've had some technical problems with audio, and scheduled commercial breaks not rolling on tone, but for the most part they have been a good partner. I hope the fans and sponsors will understand the complications it takes to put a show like the coaches show on the air. I volunteered two weekends of my life to building a corner of a hockey rink in the JPC studio and a couple of hours last weekend encoding and cutting videos (not to mention the commercial spots) so the show can make air.

It's even more frustrating when you have a show that two people worked very hard on (David Tuttle and myself) and it doesn't make slot (by Wednesday morning I feel like this beta tape is my kid). Not to mention embarrassment to myself when I tell coach the show will be airing at 8pm on Wednesday, and you all see black or a trouble slate. I hope the technical problems with this weeks Wednesday broadcast will not frustrate viewers to tune in next week. I can tell you we had clips from the Wayne State game and Boston University game with Coach and Tuttle commentary in the first block. In the second block we have a look from last years Gov Cup and what to expect this year. Block 3 is reserved for a player interview. We scheduled the show this way as we feel the player interview will be easier to wrap up and end the show on time, not because we want to short the players by any means.

In conclusion, watch Friday at 7:00pm again at 10pm, and before the rebroadcast of the games on Saturday and Sunday.
