Nathan Lawson To Get Start In The Show

Former UAA Seawolves goalie Nathan Lawson will get his first NHL game between the pipes tonight when he starts for the New York Islanders against the Phoenix Coyotes at Nassau Coleiseum (3PM Alaska Standard Time).

In three years for UAA from 2004-2007, Nathan had a .906 save percentage for the Seawolves.  He was the WCHA Rookie of the Year with a .914 save percentage in his first season.  Lawson not only delighted Anchorage fans with his athletic style and puck-handling abilities but his pregame ritual which included dousing himself with a bottle of water at the bench.

Congratulations and best of luck tonight Nathan.  For a streaming link of his debut click here.  And here's a link to a story on the NYI website.  And smart money would be betting that Justin Bourne who is an Islanders fan (obviously) and currently in NY will have some sort of feature tomorrow.

If there was a UAA goalie that wanted to score a goal more than Lawson, I don't know his name.  I remember a game (I think against North Dakota) that UAA led late and that they had pulled their goalie.  There was significant pressure being applied and at some point the puck squirted to the front of the crease and onto Lawson's stick.  I can't say they did for sure, but I know Nathan's eyes must have gotten as big as saucers at seeing the brief opening to the empty net.  He corralled the puck quickly and launched a perfect shot.  Unfortunately it was blocked.  But only by a very stellar and very aware defensive play.

Not my only memory of course, just a fun one because I can still see the play in my head.

Thanks for the link to the feed. This gives me something to do for the next 45 mins before heading to the CC game.

He's still wearing #52, nice. Also, former UAA Blueliner Matt Hanson has been picked by the Colorado Eagles of the CHL.

Matt Hanson, wow, that was a long time ago! He's played in the CHL for 5 years now.

I didn't see the first goal, but the 2nd goal against Laws was not his fault. It was a perfect pass

The third goal against he left a very juicy rebound that seemed to stay in the danger zone forever. But good effort on his part to cross his crease and try to stop the puck. Soo close to deflecting away or up into the net. OT here we come!

Very good OT for "Nate the Great" as he bounced back and made some good stops. Radim Vrbata hit metal twice on a 4-3 power play for the 'Yotes. Shootout time . . .

Frick, the feed gave out during the shootout. Former Udubber Kyle Turris (missed playing Lawson in the WCHA by one year) ends the game with the third shootout goal by Phoenix. At times Nate looked well I don't think shaky is the word, but it was is first start in the NHL. Give him some time he'll grow, made some good stops and had good effort all night. His first start could've gone worse since he is starting for the very shaky New York Islanders.

The Islanders are shaky at best. Good for Lawson to get a chance to play in the NHL. Rakhshani got to play 1 game. Hopefully we will see them both again in the show.

Nate did look shaky out there, but that is to be expected for his first NHL appearance. That game tying goal he gave up a HUGE rebound which they easily put into his wide open net.

Too bad he had to show such poor sportsmanship when he was scored on in the shootout, whacking his stick with both hands against his goal post. He'll learn.

Lawson got a tie in his first NHL start. And then he lost a fashion show. Who gives a shit about the shootout? He got a tie. The game was tied at the end. The shootout is after the game.
