CC 6 - Seawolves 1

I'm all about trying to focus on the positives after a tough loss.  Tonight there are a few positives.  It's hard to see them at the moment through the butt whooping though.  I'll write more later as I've just stopped in to make a pit stop.  I will say that for pretty much the 2nd half of the game, that the Seawolves outplayed CC when it was 5 on 5.

It'd be crazy to make much of it but, UAA scored the only 5 on 5 goal of the night.  It was a frustrating offensive night for the guys in green and gold.  The Seawolves power play couldn't generate anything.  And the power play gave up two shorties.  The other 4 CC goals all came on the power play.

The first half of the game for UAA was pretty much a nightmare.  But somewhere along about the middle of the 2nd they managed to build some momentum and then played with emotion and intensity that had been absent.

That's about all the time I feel like taking right now.  I'm going out for a beverage.  Maybe it'll help me discover some insight about the game that isn't obvious to me right now.  Maybe it won't.  If not then I'll just end by saying that a two-game series is a blessing.  Because, there is nothing I'd want more if I'd played tonight than to get another chance tomorrow.  Let's just hope all the actual players feel that way.

I do think one of the referees had some marginally inappropriate behavior at the end of the game.  He was actually leaning over into Dave Shyiak's face while vociferously arguing with him.  The kind of ignorant referee arguing you see in stupid baseball games ya know?  I thought professional referee conduct meant that you either skate away or toss the coach out of the game?  I know if I'd been in Shyiak's shoes I would have had a hard time not flattening the jerk.  But that's why I'm a loudmouth blogger and not a D1 hockey coach I guess.

So there it is ... for now.  When I get back, I'll be deleting any comments from opposition that aren't substantive or that I deem inappropriate.  And just so you know, I deem lots of stuff from opposition fans as inappropriate.  So make a point or don't waste your time.

Well, that sucked. The Wolves came out flat and only showed a small part of their talent. The defense let the bears break away on the tender too many times and Jonny didnt get enough stops (like say, Howe) the shots on goal were similar. Dont blame the refs, I saw many no calls that they have been calling all year, I think they did an alright job. Get'em on Sat Wolves!

after the 1st was over, I was pleased with the hard skating in the 2nd and 3rd. too bad CC can skate like the wind. The difference? CC finishes their rushes. CC has a big time goal tender. UAA makes too many unforced errors and has anemic goaltending. The refs weren't the difference. If that shit gets in your head, your beat.

"And the penalty kill gave up two shorties."

i don't think the penalty kill gave up any shorties. the penalty kill gave up four power play goals.

hope that beverage helped...

To quote Jimmie Johnson from Fox NFL...If you don't want your butt kicked...play better.

GO SEAWOLVES!!

Naslund's power play unit got hit for two short handed goals.
Time to access why he is out there.
Switch clark's line away from there top line, we have last change.
Defense have to start blocking shots on colorado's power play.
Same referee's tonite, we always play better saurday nite.
All the best seawolves, its only one game.

Just an idea: When you're getting smoked, why not experiment with different line combos? Same guys getting burned on PK? Give someone else a chance. Rewarded over and over for PK disasters? Give other combos a go. Inject some variety and (dare I say that dirty word?) fun. I know, I know, losing is never fun and this is serious business and so on, yet blaming the ref gets tired. Boys were flat-footed. Expect a better effort tonight.

What a disappointment. Coming off a good road trip, back to back wins and the guys get smoked in their own barn. It's no wonder why people aren't coming to see them play. Choose between going to see the Wolves get beat again or go to a highschool game. Come on guys we know you can win games. A win tonight is needed as usual.

I hope donny d doesn't feel like deleting my post. Last night was a real turn around for the black bears power play. I also wanted to let DD know that I really enjoyed the chat segment of the site last night.

That said - in the words of too short - it was nothing less than an "invasion of the flat booty bitches"

I have been thinking that we should pursue an option sort of like football. I think we should decline the penalties. It seems we are starting to give up more goals on our power play than we are scoring. Just say no to the power play.

Coach had a brilliant defensive strategy in the previous games against top ranked Denver. UAA shut down their offense and gave them fits.

Then the team comes home and lets CC walk all over them. Use the TRAP Shyiak!! It may not be the most entertaining hockey to watch, but neither was last nights game. You are aren't going to win fans back by losing 6-1!!

Guys, do you LIKE playing in front of a half full arena? Cause as a fan, I hate it. Let's see some emotion tonight.

The arena was half full even though they just beat michigan, and picked up 5 out of 8 pts. on the road.
Wcha offensive player of the week.
Team is in 8th place a few pts behind minnesota and und.
Teams record 2 wins, 2 loses and 1 tie in the second half.
One bad game and the fans still do not come out. We are a team that can finish as high as 5th or 6th place. Why would parents want to fly up to alaska, they can go to any rink in the wcha and the place if full. The season is not over, this team will surprise a lot of fans who stay at home.
11 games to go and playoffs, a strong finish is coming.
Stay tuned and support your team.

Ted: As crazy as that seems (declining penalties), I think you may be on to something. ;)

But seriously, I can see opposing teams purposefully getting penalties just so that UAA can go on the power play... *sigh*. There seems to be something statistically significant about what UAA is doing when they are on the power play that is constantly giving their opponents the shortie goals. Seeing that I am not a hockey buff I for one do not know what that 'thing' would be... strategy? D? Special teams?

PS. Yeah, losing sucks, but at least they can still learn from their mistakes. :) Oh, and they want more butts in the arena? Build an on campus ice rink. Nuff' said.

whats the word on Bryce? Think he will start tonight?

Anonymous said...

bryce who?

Anonymous said...

At least Bryce was suited up last night. Whatever the disagreement between he and the coach, I think he has paid for his "sins". Time to see what Bryce can do.

Fan, it doesn't matter how good the team is on the road, if they don't play well at home, the fans are not going to pay good money to come to the games. Except for the 3000 die hard college supporters.

It doesn't help that the University does not market the team. They are off for weeks, and there are NO commercials on TV, no radio ads, nothing in the paper. What do they expect?

SCSU beat MIN 4-1 tonight, this would be the night to make up some ground.

Heisenberg has another new recruit listed.
Andrew Pettitt from Powell River (BCHL).
He is his teams leading goal scorer.

.the team played great on the road, it did not make any difference the same fan base.
Yes we have a new marketing person, but no improvement at all.

bring on minnesota, you are next,
rappuzi kid from anchorage, non factor tonite.
uaa is for real, to bad the fans still doubt them. 5 weekends they have come back to win saturday games.
get your tickets for next week, other than the govenor's cup, you will have to spend money and fly to the final wcha to see these players, unless you come to the final seaon games against minnesota-duluth.

great effort, maybe the players should all transfer to bemdji or nebreska omaka next year, better fan support.
