Kozun Rookie of the Week; Cameron Suspended One Game

It's a mixed bag of good and bad news today for the Seawolves.  The WCHA announced it's players of the week and Tad Kozun got the nod as Rookie of the Week for the league.  The WCHA also announced that Brett Cameron is suspended for one game for his hit on Wisconsin's Tim Davison.  Both of Kozun's goals and the Cameron hit can be viewed on the previous post here.

Kozun had a excellent debut weekend with his 2 goal and 1 assist weekend performance.  He was named to the All-Tournament team also.  Congratulations to Tad on winning this award for his first two regular season games.  I hope we all get used to seeing Tad's picture here on the blog in upcoming weeks when the WCHA announces it's POTWs.

I've heard a lot of comments about Cameron's hit from a range of sources.  I'm of the opinion that there was certainly no malicious intent.  Brett threw what would have been considered a real solid hit had the circumstances been slightly different; but Davison's size comes into play (he is 5ft 10in and Cameron is 6ft 3in) as well as his position with the puck in the corner.  With his head down and turning he was a bit vulnerable.  It's understandable that he got a 5 minute major for the play.

I don't think it's unreasonable for me to say that had Davison popped back up from the hit and continued to play that we wouldn't see Brett receiving this supplemental suspension.  Like it or not the resultant injury (from clean hits or malicious ones) or lack of injury has an influence on subjective assessments from league officials.

Cameron won't be in the line-up this Friday versus Penn State at the Brice Tournament in Fairbanks.

Here's the text from the league's announcement:
EDINA, Minn. – Oct. 13, 2014 – The Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) league office today announced a one-game suspension for University of Alaska Anchorage senior forward Brett Cameron, effective for the Seawolves' next NCAA Division I contest.
The suspension is a result of Cameron's game misconduct infraction for contact to the head of a Wisconsin player, which occurred during the third period of UAA's game of Saturday, Oct. 11.
Alaska Anchorage's next scheduled game is Friday, Oct. 17 vs. Penn State in Fairbanks, part of the Alaska Gold Rush. Cameron would be eligible to return for the Seawolves' Saturday, Oct. 18 contest vs. Air Force in Fairbanks.

I'm considering making the trek north to Fairbanks on Friday. I haven't decided if I'm going to fly up or make the drive however if someone wanted to split the gas I'd be more than willing to make the drive. I'm willing to meet up for a beer this week that way we aren't complete strangers prior to driving north. Feel free to email me if you are interested edhardon@gmail.com.

I'm both happy and sad that I can't go. I'm happy because I'm working all weekend and will get paid. But sad that I can't go. Hopefully, I can plan it so I can go in the middle of January when we get our first crack at UA_.

If you can go in January email me at the above mentioned email and you can ride with me if I'm not out of town working or down south at a Bruins game.

DD, is it a typo on your part or does the league think there's a gold rush going on up in _airbanks?
As noted elsewhere Brett is being made an example of. He comes around the net like Jimjames says at "mach 3" and lays one on the guy and because he flattens the bozo while he's standing there counting his toes he gets tossed. The 5...meh...but the game? BS
That Tad kid could score big time in Juniors and it's looking like maybe he brought that touch for the back of the net along with him. Good on Tad!!! Congratulations!

Al,
Nope. That's cut and pasted from the press release. But let's face it, calling it the "Goal Rush" kinda invites the "Gold Rush" confusion from people outside. But yeah um … it's a league press release. Someone up in GoldRushTown likely already alerted them to their error.

Cameron's hit showed me something about his character....he's showing up to play each game and wants to be seen as a leader. The circumstances were unfortunate and wishing the Bucky D man a smooth recovery.

Do team members earn a patch for a big hit? Or do they need to take the other player out to earn the 1" patches?
